This raises a good point though. Would you buy a new car that only lasted 20000 milea if it was only 3-4000 dollars?

Depending on the features of said car, probably. that's about 2 years of driving (probably a bit less), so it's the same as a 15-20k car lasting you 10 years, but without the stigma of driving a 10 year old econo car that's about to grenade on the highway.

Depends on how awesome the car is. If it's just a commuter then no. There are plenty of used cars you can buy for that price that will last for decades if you maintain them.

But if I could buy a crazy fast sports car for that price that would only last 20,000 miles then it would be a good deal. Because even if someone gave you an exotic sports car for free the maintenance on it would be at least that much after 20,000 miles anyhow.

No. Because used $3000 cars can last much much longer than that :p

I've already put over 20k on my $700 car, and it has no signs of dying soon!

However, many people pay 10-20x that for a car that only lasts that long (Jaguar, Land Rover, etc)

Lets say that the math carries through and it has the features of a 20k car. So like a nice DD that isn't over the top. Jetta or tC. Somethin like that.

By features I also meant things like engine/trans choices and quality. For the purposes of this exercise, I'm assuming it's a 4000$ Jetta that explodes at 20k miles.

Yes. I'd rather get a 2 year newer car than pay repair bills for a 10 year old car.

I mean most of us Jalops would say no because we recognize the inherent value in used cars and extending the life of our cars. But I think if John Q Public could get a new Accord or 320i every other year for 3500 I think they'd do it.

MSRP says 20k gets you a Jetta SE with a roof. That comes with the new 1.8t and either a 5MT or 6AT and the leatherette with the touch screen radio (no nav).

They definitely would, since it would be cheaper than leasing. It would be like paying $145/month for a 2 year 10,000 mile a year lease. You can't lease a 320i for that price.

Why not just by a used car? I mean if it's something insanely fast.... of course, that won't happen though.

As Jalops we'd probably find a way to drive it to 300,000 miles.

I think many people would. But that's a pretty terrifyingly disposable vehicle, and I don't think our culture should lean that way.
